This cold and flu fighter recipe was inspired by a delicious drink I enjoyed frequently at Be Love Restaurant in Victoria. I decided to try and make my own, as it is a cost effective (and logistically feasible, given that we are traveling) option. There is so much immune boosting goodness in each shot, with the anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties of honey, the vitamin C rich goji berries, camu camu and lemon juice, the anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits of ginger, turmeric and cayenne, and last but not least, the anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-viral properties in garlic. This shot packs a powerful punch!
I have been making this blend for a couple of months now, adjusting the recipe slightly based on what ingredients I have on hand. It comes in really handy when one of us starts getting sick, it helps to nip the cold in the bud, or at least shorten the duration.
My kids really like this blend, despite the cayenne and garlic! The honey adds a subtle sweetness to the beverage, and helps to offset the stronger flavours. I love to add a bit of additional citrus to the blend; organic orange or grapefruit makes for a lovely addition. Enjoy, and may the flu fighting force be with you!
Cold and Flu Fighter
1 Tbsp honey
½ cup warm filtered water
1 Tbsp goji berries
Juice of 1 organic lemon
1 Tbsp grated fresh turmeric (or up to 1 tsp dried)
1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger (or up to 1 tsp dried)
Small cloves garlic, crushed
½ tsp camu camu
Dissolve 1 Tbsp honey in ½ cup warm water. Add remaining ingredients to a high speed blender and process until smooth, adjusting flavours as needed. The recipe makes enough for 2 large shots.
