Turmeric is a pretty amazing little root. It's bright yellow colour (orange, if you are using a fresh root) is indicative of curcumin, the compound contained in turmeric which contains pretty incredible cancer fighting and anti-inflammatory benefits. I love freezing and grating the fresh root into curries and beverages, it has a lovely taste and texture. Freezing the root ahead of time will guarantee a fine grate without any stringiness (the same applies to ginger). Turmeric powder is a good bet, if you don't have the fresh root available.
Pairing your turmeric with black pepper and a healthy fat like coconut oil will help with the absorption of curcumin, as evidenced in this fantastic video on Boosting the Bioavailability of Curcumin by Nutrition Facts.org.
I mix turmeric into lots of my curries and veg broth, and I also enjoy having it on its own as a latte. I came up with this spice blend in an attempt to incorporate the black pepper mentioned above, along with a few spices that pair deliciously with this vibrant spice. As a word of warning be cautious when measuring out your spice blend, turmeric stains and if bright yellow is not your thing, you might be out of luck.
Turmeric Tea Blend
4 Tbsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cardamom
1/4 tsp ground pepper
1/8 tsp ground ginger
Pinch grated nutmeg
Blend all of your whole spices (if using) in a spice grinder. Combine ingredients in a small mason jar (an 8oz/half pint jar works perfectly for this recipe) and shake to combine. I like to use 1.5 tsp up to a full tablespoon of the blend for each 16oz cup of liquid.
Turmeric Cider: combine 1.5 tsp turmeric blend with your favourite cider and 1 tsp coconut oil. Blend in a blender until smooth and frothy and serve.
Turmeric Latte: combine 1.5 tsp to 1 Tbsp turmeric blend with 1 tsp honey, 1 Tbsp coconut oil, 1 cup hot water and 1 cup milk of choice. Blend in a blender until smooth and frothy and serve.
Turmeric Chai Latte: combine 1.5 tsp to 1 Tbsp turmeric blend with 1 tsp honey, 1 Tbsp coconut oil, 1 cup chaga chai and 1 cup milk of choice. Blend in a blender until smooth and frothy and serve.
