I came up with this smoothie recipe using a few staple ingredients we had on hand along with a brand new find - frozen black raspberries! I love to incorporate berries as much as I possibly can, they are chock full of antioxidants and pack a powerful punch in the flavour department. Black Raspberries are new to me, I have fond memories of picking red raspberries in my Grandma's backyard as a kid, but I have not seen a black variety before. According to this fact sheet, put out by the Berry Health Benefits Network & the Oregon State University, Black Raspberries' deep pigment gives them one of the highest antioxidant ratings of all berries. Their dark pigment also provides them with high levels of anthocyanins, which are anti-inflammatory and work in a preventative capacity with health issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. These berries pack a powerful punch! I have paired them with turmeric, to take full advantage of the anti-inflammatory properties present in the form of curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its vibrant colour.
Black pepper may seem a bit strange for a smoothie, but my decision to include it in this recipe was intentional. The combination of turmeric with black pepper and fat (in this case, omega 3 rich hemp seeds) helps to boost your absorption of curcumin, helping you reap all of the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory benefits it contains. In addition to fresh grated turmeric, I also included a tablespoon of fresh grated ginger. I felt that the flavour of ginger would compliment the mango & berries, and as an added bonus ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties, which made it a perfect candidate for this recipe. I love to freeze my ginger and turmeric, as they grate into a fine puree with no stringiness when frozen.
I decided to include some Pine Pollen from Harmonic Arts, due to its antioxidant and adaptogenic properties. I also added a teaspoon of camu camu powder, due to the fact that it is high in vitamin C & provides a nice immune boost. A bit of immune support never hurts! If you don't have these Superfoods on hand no worries, this smoothie would still be delicious without them!
Last but not least, this smoothie received two thumbs up from my kids. I make a lot of smoothies, some go over well, others not so much. This one was a kid-approved winner!
Mango & Black Raspberry Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie
1 ripe mango, peeled and diced
10oz bag frozen black raspberries (mine were put out by Stahlbush Island Farms)
2 Tbsp organic hemp seeds
1 Tbsp fresh grated ginger (or 1 tsp dried)
1 Tbsp fresh grated turmeric (or 1 tsp dried)
2 tsp pine pollen
1 tsp camu camu powder
1/4 tsp fresh cracked pepper
4 cups almond milk
Combine ingredients in a high speed blender and process until smooth. It's especially nice served with a glass straw!
